Farm-raised in Hoosier land, Vicki says it’s true: ‘You can take the girl out of the country, but you can’t take the country out of the girl.’ After graduating from Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana, she married her high-school sweetheart and began a teaching career in the Indiana elementary schools of Frankfort and Lafayette. Traveling across the nation with her husband during his Air Force years, she continued teaching young students until starting her own family. In 1967 she and her daughter returned to Indiana to be closer to family, anticipating the birth of a son/brother during his father’s tour in Vietnam. Air Force life gave way to many years in the commercial air line industry, perpetuating a nomadic lifestyle until establishing deep roots in Littleton, Colorado. For the next twenty-five years Vicki and her family were an integral part of this vibrant community. It was, however, after the move to northern Colorado that she made time and space for her writing interests. She enrolled in writing classes and work shops and attended poetry readings, all the while pouring forth on paper, thoughts and ideas long stored in her heart and soul. Vicki is a member of Colorado Independent Publishers Association-CIPA, and the Small Publishers Association of North America-SPAN. Having long ago traded her love for the aroma of freshly plowed soil and new mown hay in Indiana, she now makes her home on Boedecker Lake in Loveland, Colorado- just ‘down the road a piece’ from Rocky Mountain National Park. In this rich setting of lush, flowered meadows, magnificent mountains and myriad varieties of trees, creatures and water features, she was inspired to capture some family experiences from years of camping together in the scenic state parks and national forests throughout Colorado. As an educator and active grandparent of three teen-age grandchildren, her love for kids came together with her love of music and nature, resulting in a collection of playful, informative poems which she titled, RHYMING THE ROCKIES. “Wouldn’t it be fun to have these rhymes set to music?” she exclaimed one day. Dreams, combined with creativity and lots of effort, do come true. Vicki established Laughing Woman Publishing Company and released her first CD for kids in July, 2007. |
